Jacob DeShazer bombed Japan with Doolittle's raiders in 1942, was captured, and spent forty brutal months in POW camps, most of it in solitary. Given a Bible for three weeks in 1944, he memorized whole passages and found his hatred for his guards dissolving — he began treating them kindly, and decided that if he lived, he would come back. He did: thirty years as a missionary in Japan, including a church in Nagoya, the city he had bombed.
