Roman Space Telescope Launches on Falcon Heavy
NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a roughly $4 billion flagship observatory, aboard SpaceX's Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center, on a mission to map exoplanets and probe dark energy and dark matter. The telescope will travel about a million miles to the L2 point, joining Hubble and Webb with a wide-field infrared view far larger than its predecessors. It carries two main instruments—the 300-megapixel Wide Field Instrument for broad surveys and a Coronagraph Instrument for direct imaging of exoplanets—enabling both broad discovery and targeted planetary studies. Following launch, a 90-day commissioning period will deploy systems and begin science operations, with first high-resolution images expected before the winter holidays. The Roman mission builds on decades of collaboration among Caltech, JPL, IPAC, and NASA, and aims to address fundamental questions about dark matter, dark energy, gravity at cosmic scales, and the abundance of exoplanets. With its rapid, wide-area sky surveys, Roman is expected to operate for about five years, with potential extensions, complementing the capabilities of Hubble and JWST and transforming our view of the universe.
