Roman Space Telescope Launch Aug 30, 2026

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set for liftoff on Sunday, August 30, from Kennedy Space Center atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy, with live coverage beginning hours earlier. Named for NASA’s first chief astronomer, Nancy Grace Roman, the observatory will deliver a wide-field infrared view roughly 100 times larger than Hubble, enabling surveys to probe dark energy, dark matter, exoplanets, and distant galaxies. Roman will travel to the Sun–Earth L2 point about 1.5 million kilometers away, where it will operate a planned five-year primary mission with the possibility of extension, aided by its three-mirror design and a coronagraph. Its instruments include a wide-field near-infrared camera and a coronagraph. NASA and SpaceX will stream the launch across multiple platforms, and data from the mission are expected to be cataloged and made available to researchers and educators alike. The mission embodies a landmark collaboration in the space ecosystem, aiming to deepen understanding of the universe’s expansion, dark matter, and the population of exoplanets, while extending the legacy of Hubble and Webb.
