PGA Tour Unveils Two-Track Postseason Playoffs

Beginning in 2028, the PGA Tour will overhaul its postseason with a two-track system: a Championship Series for the top 90 players and a Challenger Series, culminating in a two-week, match-play Tour Championship at rotating venues. The Championship Series Finale is a 72-hole stroke-play event that crowns both a tournament champion and the season-long points winner, with the top 32 advancing to the Tour Championship. Week one of the Tour Championship features eight groups of four in group-stage match play, with the top two from each group moving to a four-day, single-elimination bracket in Week two to decide the champion, and ties resolved by playoffs if needed. This format marks the first use of match play in the Tour postseason since 2023 and aims to create a clearer, more consequential finish with rotating prestigious venues. The change is intended to provide a stronger season-long narrative and broader venue exposure, moving away from the traditional three-tournament FedEx Cup playoff format. The plan has been described as a collaborative effort of the Future Competition Committee, led by PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp, with engagement from fans, players, and partners.
