Huawei plans more AI pharma partnerships in China

Huawei is expanding its AI-driven drug discovery efforts in China, aiming to deepen collaborations with domestic pharmaceutical firms across the drug development pipeline while leveraging its Ascend and Kunpeng hardware. The company is moving beyond basic research to support full-scale drug manufacturing and clinical implementation, positioning an end-to-end hardware-software infrastructure to speed up molecular design and trial planning. Williams Zhang, president of Huawei's healthcare unit, says current projects are mainly with domestic drugmakers and include hospital-based clinical practice, with Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings cited as the industry’s first production-validated project using Huawei’s AI models on home-grown hardware. Huawei’s push comes amid growing competition in AI drug discovery, including Nvidia’s partnerships with Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk, as firms seek faster, more efficient development timelines. Analysts estimate AI-assisted drug discovery could cut early-stage development timelines and costs in the next three to five years, underscoring the strategic importance of Huawei’s hardware-centric approach. Overall, Huawei emphasizes domestically developed AI models and hardware to power a pharmaceutical ecosystem that could shorten development cycles and expand its role in China’s pharma sector.
