Trump plans Kim Jong Un meeting
President Trump is pushing aides to explore a possible in-person meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, potentially as early as November during his next Asia trip. The Wall Street Journal reports that Trump privately discussed arranging the talk and that it could coincide with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen. The discussions come as Trump moves to substantially reduce joint military drills with South Korea, citing his reportedly very good relationship with Kim. In past years the two leaders met three times, all during Trump’s first term, with no denuclearization agreement reached. The reporting notes that formal preparations have not yet begun and that details remain unclear as regional tensions persist. The broader aim appears to revive a diplomatic track on North Korea’s weapons program, a priority Trump has pressed during his presidency.
