The Christmas Truce of 1914

In the first winter of World War I, German and British soldiers along the Western Front spontaneously stopped shooting on Christmas. They sang carols across the lines, met in No Man's Land to exchange cigarettes and buttons, buried each other's dead, and in places played football. For one night, ordinary men proved peace can break out anywhere — even in the middle of a world war.
