After a gunman killed five girls in a one-room Amish schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, the community's answer staggered the world: within hours, Amish neighbors visited the shooter's widow and parents to console them, attended his burial, and set up a fund for his children. Asked how, one elder said simply that forgiveness was a decision — 'the acid of hate destroys the container.'
