Stubby, a stray bull terrier mix smuggled to France by Private Robert Conroy, served through 17 battles on the Western Front — waking soldiers before gas attacks, finding the wounded in No Man's Land, and famously pinning a German spy until soldiers arrived. He came home a sergeant, led victory parades, and met three presidents: the original proof that rescue dogs rescue us back.
