After an escape at Auschwitz, guards selected ten men to die. When Franciszek Gajowniczek cried out for his wife and children, Father Maximilian Kolbe stepped out of line and volunteered to take his place. He spent his final days leading the condemned in prayer and song. Gajowniczek survived the war and lived to 93, spending his life telling the story of the man who died so he could live.
