Irena Sendler Smuggles 2,500 Children to Safety
From 1943 · a Good News classic
Social worker Irena Sendler used her sanitation-inspector pass to enter the Warsaw Ghetto, carrying out some 2,500 Jewish children in toolboxes, coffins, and ambulances with a dog trained to bark and cover their cries. She buried lists of their true names in jars under an apple tree so they could someday be reunited with family. Arrested and tortured by the Gestapo in 1943, she never gave up a single name.
