German Consumer Confidence Rises to -26.6 as Spending Remains Reluctant
Germany’s GfK/NIM consumer climate improved to about -26.6 in September, beating expectations of around -29.2 to -29.6. The bounce was led by a sharp rebound in income expectations, which turned positive, with economic expectations also firmer though still subdued. Willingness to buy remained near depressed levels, while willingness to save stayed elevated, signaling cautious consumer behavior despite the improved mood. Analysts, including NIM, caution that the recovery is fragile amid persistent high prices and the risk of a downturn. The overall trend shows clearer confidence gains ahead of autumn, but households still rely on income prospects and inflation dynamics to translate into stronger spending. In a broader context, this aligns with GDP data showing incremental improvements even as consumer demand remains a key growth hinge.
