Apollo 8 Reads Genesis From the Moon
From 1968 · a Good News classic
After a year of assassinations and riots, Apollo 8 became the first crewed ship to orbit the Moon. On Christmas Eve, Borman, Lovell, and Anders took the Earthrise photo and read the opening verses of Genesis to the largest broadcast audience in history, signing off: 'Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you — all of you on the good Earth.' A stranger's telegram to NASA said it best: 'Thank you Apollo 8. You saved 1968.'
