Dozens Feared Dead as Sokoto Boat Capsizes
A spate of boat capsizings in Gorau town, Goronyo LGA, Sokoto State has caused a high casualty toll as rescue operations continue, with reports of about 40 dead from boats carrying farmers and children to rice fields while more than 70 people were on board. Emergency services, local divers and residents are conducting ongoing search-and-rescue efforts, with the village head among the survivors and authorities yet to confirm full details.

Sokoto State (Hausa: ; Fula: , Leydi Sokoto) is one of the 36 states of Nigeria, located in the extreme northwest of the country. Bounded by Republic of the Niger to the north and west for 363 km (226 miles), and the states of Zamfara to the east, and Kebbi to the south and west, partly across the Ka River. Its capital and largest city is the city of Sokoto. Sokoto is located near to the confluence of the Sokoto River and the Rima River. As of 2005 it has an estimated population of more than 4.2 million.
