Overview
"Bejeweled" is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It is the ninth track of her tenth studio album, Midnights (2022), which was released on October 21, 2022, through Republic Records. Written and produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff, "Bejeweled" is a synth-laden synth-pop and bubblegum pop song about recognizing self-worth.
The song received favorable comments from music critics, who interpreted the lyricism as Swift's declaration of her return to pop music and lauded the song's upbeat production and empowering message. It was accompanied by a music video written and directed by Swift—influenced by the story of Cinderella—starring Swift, Antonoff, American actress Laura Dern, rock band Haim, burlesque artist Dita Von Teese, and British make-up artist Pat McGrath. It features several Easter eggs that hinted at Swift's next project, which was later confirmed as Speak Now (Taylor's Version) (2023). The song peaked within the top 10 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore, and the Philippines, as well as the United States where it landed at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. "Bejeweled" was included on the set list of Swift's sixth headlining concert tour, the Eras Tour (2023).
Background and production
On August 28, 2022, Taylor Swift won Video of the Year for All Too Well: The Short Film (2021) at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. In her acceptance speech, she announced her tenth studio album and its impending release date on October 21. Soon after, Swift revealed the album's title Midnights and its cover on her social media, but did not immediately release the track list. On a September 6, 2022, video titled "The making of Midnights" on her Instagram, she revealed Jack Antonoff, a musician who had worked with Swift since 1989 (2014), was a producer on Midnights. About a month before the album's release, Swift announced a thirteen-episode series called Midnights Mayhem with Me on the social media platform TikTok. In each episode of the series, Swift revealed the title of one album track. In the seventh episode on October 5, 2022, Swift announced the title of the ninth track as "Bejeweled".
Swift wrote and produced "Bejeweled" with Antonoff; the latter recorded the track with audio engineers David Hart, Evan Smith, and Laura Sisk at Rough Customer Studio, Brooklyn, and Electric Lady Studios, New York.
