Trump Pushes Cheap Beef While GOP Senators Warn It Hurts Ranchers

The Plan to Flood the Market

President Trump wants cheaper beef for every family. He announced a move to bring in 300,000 metric tons of foreign ground beef. The deal promises to sell it at 25% below current market prices which would happen over a 90-day span.

But a group of Republican senators is pushing back hard. They say this move hurts the very farmers who supported him. Trump’s own allies in the Senate warn that flooding the market with cheap imports will destroy American cattlemen.

The Senators Who Say No

Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas is leading the charge against the plan. He is up for re-election and one of Trump’s top allies. Fox News was informed by Cotton that the reason for elevated prices is simply that our cattle herd remains too small.

He contended that cattlemen in our nation would face increased pressure solely due to imported beef selling below market prices. Cotton said he advised the President against this “ill-advised action” in the past. He now urges him to reconsider the move.

Other Republicans in key races agree with him. Rep. Ashley Hinson of Iowa called the idea a “bad idea” on X. She is running to replace Sen. Joni Ernst in a tightly contested race. Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota simply charged, “This Hurts!”

Trump’s Defense of the Move

President Trump defends the plan as what Americans need right now. He said on Truth Social that “that’s what the people want.” He reaffirmed to a crowd of supporters in South Carolina that he loves the ranchers.

Trump claimed the ranchers admitted they need help to lower prices. According to him, while they have performed admirably, they acknowledge that some assistance is necessary to lower prices, which is what he is taking action on.

Ground beef prices have soared to roughly $7 per pound. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicates that the cattle herd reached historic lows unseen since the 1950s. The White House has not said which countries the beef will come from.

The Risk to the Senate Majority

The Washington Examiner reports that this issue could cost Republicans the Senate. An Iowa focus group showed voters blame tariffs and Trump for high costs.

Republicans hold a three-seat majority in the upper chamber. Losing Iowa would put huge pressure on states like Alaska and Maine. The Cook Political Report recently moved the Iowa race to a “toss-up.”

This is a fight over who pays the price. The President wants lower grocery bills for families. But his own party says the cost is the American farmer. The ranchers are great, but the market might not survive the shock.
