The Interview With Ted Cruz

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas told Sen. Ted Cruz that Black Americans shouldn’t face a demand to follow specific political views just because of their skin color. The Justice called this expectation a “walking contradiction” to his own life and principles during a recent podcast interview. Fox News reported that Thomas rejected the idea that his race should dictate his political beliefs or actions. He stated clearly that he refused to accept an invitation to think a certain way just because others told him to.

‘Stay Black and Die’

Thomas shared a stark saying he heard growing up in segregated Georgia about the limits placed on Black people. “We had this saying that there are only two things I have to do: stay Black and die,” Thomas told Cruz. He explained that this phrase was a retort to people who set mandates for him based on his skin color.

The Justice noted that critics often assume there is only one way for a Black person to think or act. He said, “And I, of course, declined that invitation.” Because he has diverged from their expectations about his thoughts, he now becomes a walking contradiction.

He compared these modern demands to the racial segregation he faced as a child in Savannah. Thomas argued that telling him which books to read or ideas to embrace is wrong, just as blocking him from the library stacks was wrong. He asked critics why they have a problem with him embracing certain ideas if they agree he should have been allowed in the library. “They said, ‘Oh, you’re confused.’ Well, I’m not confused. You’re confused. You confuse me with someone who’s been in indentured servitude or something,” he said. Why should he accept a definition that ignores his actual history?

A Life of Self-Reliance

The interview took place as Cruz released his new book titled “Going Further: The Incomparable Clarence Thomas.” New York Post — Politics noted that Cruz conducted roughly nine hours of interviews with the Justice to write the tome. Thomas praised Cruz for standing by him during past attacks regarding his wife and his ties to conservative groups. He recalled how his grandfather, who was raised by a freed slave, taught him to live with self-reliance and never complain. After his grandparents died in 1983, Thomas decided to live the rest of his life as a memorial to their memory. That decision shaped his entire career on the bench.

In the annals of US history, Clarence Thomas stands as the second Black justice appointed to the Supreme Court. He spoke with Cruz on the “Verdict with Ted Cruz” podcast, which dropped on Monday. The Justice emphasized that he refuses to be defined by a deterministic view of his race. He made it clear that he will not let others confuse him with someone who accepts indentured servitude. This stance defines his long tenure on the bench and his personal history.
