The gun-control organization March For Our Lives sent an email fundraiser announcing plans to pass a “weapons ban” in New Jersey, according to screenshots posted on social media.
The group, founded by survivors of the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, sought donations to support a “weapons ban” in New Jersey, according to the screenshots posted Monday. The group used the term “weapons of war” in the message, hinting that the target might be so-called “assault weapons.”
“The proposed weapons ban in New Jersey is a vital step toward getting weapons off our streets and protecting our neighborhoods from preventable tragedy,” the fundraiser claims.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit threw out New Jersey’s ban on modern semiautomatic firearms in a July 17 ruling. In the opinion authored by Circuit Judge Arianna Freeman, a Biden appointee, the Third Circuit expanded an order by a federal district judge that had initially ruled that New Jersey’s ban on AR-15s violated the Second Amendment, saying the Second Amendment protected all modern semiautomatic rifles and standard-capacity magazines.
March For Our Lives joined other anti-Second Amendment groups that sought to preserve the state’s ban, including Giffords and Everytown in filing amicus briefs in that case, defending the New Jersey law’s constitutionality.
“We agree with the District Court that New Jersey’s ban on Colt AR-15s violates the Second Amendment. However, because the record supports the same result for all semi-automatic rifles—not only Colt AR-15s—we will MODIFY the District Court’s order so that it deems the Assault Firearm Provisions unconstitutional with respect to the full class of semi-automatic rifles,” Freeman wrote for the full court. “We will AFFIRM that part of the order as modified. The LCM Provisions also violate the Second Amendment, so we will REVERSE the District Court’s order with respect to those.”
