Stephen McDannell Hillenburg (August 21, 1961 – November 26, 2018) was an American animator, writer, producer, director, and marine science teacher. He is known for creating the Nickelodeon animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants - on which he served as the showrunner for seasons 1-3, and again from season 9 until his death - which has become the fifth-longest-running American animated series. He also performed the original voice of Patchy's pet bird Potty the Parrot from said show.
