India Leads World Rail Electrification at 99.6%
India has cemented its status as the global leader with 99.6% of its broad gauge railway electrified, surpassing major economies and second only to Switzerland, with rapid electrification of 48,072 route km between 2014 and 2026. The program has reduced diesel use from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25, cutting carbon emissions and saving foreign exchange while enabling faster, more efficient, and cleaner rail operations.

Railways approves ₹440 crore third line, eases congestion

Indian Railways has approved a 14.52-km third railway line between Nimpura West Outer Cabin and Midnapur on the South Eastern Railway at ₹440 crore to ease congestion on the High Utilisation Network and boost capacity for both passenger and freight services. The line is expected to add about 3.52 million tonnes per annum of freight capacity, in a corridor currently handling 23.80 MTPA at 115.71% capacity, moving key commodities such as coal, iron ore, cement and fertilisers.

As of 2024, it manages the fourth largest national railway system by size, with a track length of 135,207 km (84,014 mi), running track length of 109,748 km (68,194 mi) and route length of 69,181 km (42,987 mi), of which 66,820 km (41,520 mi) is 1,676 mm broad-gauge. As of October 2025, approximately 99.1% of the broad-gauge railway network had been electrified. With more than 1.2 million employees, it is the ninth-largest employer of the world and the second largest employer of India.
