Polish-Registered Bus Crash on M3 Kills 12 in Hungary
A Polish-registered coach carrying about 57 passengers and two drivers crashed on the M3 motorway near Mezokeresztes in eastern Hungary around 1 am, overturning into a ditch and killing 12 people with dozens more injured as travelers were returning from a pilgrimage in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Police said the driver likely fell asleep and the driver has been taken into custody as investigators review the circumstances. Rescue teams and medical services worked to free and treat passengers, with initial figures indicating at least 10 seriously injured and around 35 people reportedly rescued. Polish officials confirmed all those on board were Polish citizens, and the bus was bound for Nyíregyháza. Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar offered condolences and thanked emergency services, while Polish President Karol Nawrocki and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski expressed sorrow and said consular assistance was in place. The investigation is ongoing, with fatigue described as a preliminary factor and authorities continuing to provide updates on casualties and injuries.
