Scooter rider killed by minivan in North Seattle; teen driver cooperates

A 37-year-old man riding an electric scooter was killed early Tuesday in North Seattle when a westbound minivan struck him at the intersection of 24th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 85th Street. A bus driver found the rider in the middle of the intersection and called 911 around 12:44 a.m.; Seattle Fire Department medics attempted life-saving measures but the victim died at the scene. The 16-year-old driver returned to the scene and cooperated with investigators, and a drug-recognition exam found no signs of impairment. Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives are examining the circumstances surrounding the crash and the roadway was closed while investigators worked the scene. The incident occurred near the edge of Washington state’s driving restrictions for teens, and authorities are assessing whether licensing status or supervision played a role in the crash. Investigations are ongoing and updates are expected as authorities review evidence and interview witnesses.
