Ohio to Receive $319M in Meta Settlement

States led by Ohio will share about $17 billion from a multistate Meta settlement over ten years, with Ohio receiving roughly $319 million. The pact, described as the largest big-tech settlement to date, imposes sweeping protections for users under 18 on Facebook and Instagram, including a two-hour daily time limit with pauses, a nighttime block, and school-day restrictions on push notifications. It also strengthens age verification, improves age-appropriate controls, removes beauty filters and visible like counts, and expands safeguards against bullying and harmful content. The agreement provides for independent auditing to assess compliance and effectiveness; protections are to be implemented across participating states, with some measures lasting up to a decade and a default chronological feed option for teens. A contingent $5.2 billion in potential payments could be triggered if YouTube and TikTok also adopt parallel measures. Alabama’s attorney general and other officials describe the settlement as a model for nationwide youth-safety protections.
