Giants' Austin Sidelined by Serious Knee Injury
New Giants wideout Calvin Austin sustained a serious knee injury at practice, and was carted off after going down in a 1-on-1 drill, drawing consolation from teammates and owner John Mara. Odell Beckham Jr. and Darnell Mooney stepped up in his absence as the Giants experiment with receiver depth this preseason. Austin, 27, had signed a one-year deal after four seasons with the Steelers and was viewed as a versatile, three-position receiver and returner, potentially impacting the 53-man roster and special-teams roles. If sidelined long-term, the injury could solidify Beckham’s roster spot and alter competition among younger receivers behind Malik Nabers. The Giants are next in action Friday night against the Jets as they reassess depth behind Nabers, Slayton, Mooney, Nabers, Fields, Berrios, and Beckham.
