Movable Middle Reaches 28% as Spiritual Openness Grows
New research shows renewed spiritual curiosity across the United States, yet interest in faith does not always lead to deeper engagement. The American Bible Society's State of theBible USA 2026 reports 28% of Americans in the Movable Middle open to the Bible but not deeply engaged, a gain of about nine million since 2024. Barna's 2026 State of the Church similarly finds growing openness while long-term Christian formation lags. Author and pastor Pete Robertson asks what actually shapes believers' beliefs, moving beyond participation metrics to examine unseen cultural and religious systems. In his book Beyond the System: Breaking Free from Worldly and Religious Systems, Robertson argues culture and tradition can influence faith without conscious awareness and calls for examining whether faith draws people closer to God or merely binds them to a system. The aim is to equip readers to recognize these influences and pursue genuine spiritual transformation rather than mere curiosity.
