Moreno Convicted in Sinohydro Bribery Case

Ecuador’s National Court convicted former president Lenín Moreno of bribery tied to Sinohydro during his vice presidency, finding that the Chinese company paid bribes to secure financing for the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric project. The verdict states that more than $75 million in bribes were routed to Moreno and relatives to influence the project’s awarding and financing. The court said Moreno used his office to intervene in financing outside his jurisdiction, contributing to the illicit funds. Prosecutors are seeking a six-year-and-six-month prison sentence, plus disqualification from public office, fines, and reparations for Moreno and several family members among a larger group of co-defendants. Moreno has denied responsibility, blaming former president Rafael Correa and former vice president Jorge Glas, and asserting he did not personally receive any money. The case involves about 20 people and the sentencing process is progressing.
