GM resumes Sierra production at Oshawa

GM will bring next-generation heavy-duty GMC Sierra production back to Oshawa, covering 4,600 unionized workers under a three-year deal amid tariff pressures from the United States. The agreement includes a C$144 million investment to launch Sierra HD production at the Oshawa plant and maintains two shifts for the duration of the 2026 agreement after previously shelving a third shift. It also allocates C$215 million to St. Catharines Propulsion Plant to assemble a next-generation transmission starting in 2029, creating about 250 jobs, while pledging not to close or sell the CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll and giving it first consideration for Canadian Armed Forces defence work if contracts are awarded. Workers would receive a 3% annual wage increase, a $10,000 productivity bonus, a new December bonus, and a layoff-mitigation program as part of the package. The union is preparing for ratification before pivoting talks to Stellantis, with broader economic headwinds including U.S. tariffs cited as a major backdrop.
