Global coral reefs see recovery time shrink as heatwaves drive 9.5% coral loss
The Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network’s 2025 assessment finds global hard coral cover fell by 9.5% from the 1980–2009 average to 2020–2024, driven largely by climate-driven heat stress and mass bleaching events. Bleaching now recurs every five to six years, shrinking the window for reefs to recover and reach maturity and reproduction. Researchers warn of a “staircase of decline” where successive disturbances erode recovery prospects, with some regions facing disturbances annually. A new framework classifies reefs into healthy, coping, and struggling states, highlighting that complex, structurally rich reefs are most vulnerable and provide less protection and biodiversity as they degrade. The research identifies roughly 165,000 square kilometers of reefs with the potential to endure climate change if protected, yet only a fraction are currently safeguarded, indicating a critical protection gap. Taken together, scientists say climate change is intensifying heatwaves and local stressors, driving a long-term decline in reef health and demanding urgent conservation and policy action to stem the trend.
