Glen Powell, Linklater team for Lou Gehrig biopic
A Universal Pictures biopic about Yankees legend Lou Gehrig is in development, with Glen Powell set to star and Richard Linklater attached to direct. The project reunites Powell and Linklater after Everybody Wants Some!!, with Simon Rich writing and Lorne Michaels as a producer, alongside Barnstorm’s Dan Cohen and Broadway Video’s Erin David. The film will tell the life of Gehrig, known as The Iron Horse, whose 17-year career with the Yankees included six World Series titles and a World War II-era farewell after an ALS diagnosis that ended his playing days. It is not known when production will begin or when the film might be released, and details about casting and plot scope beyond Gehrig’s career and illness remain under development. This endeavor adds to a long lineage of Gehrig storytelling, including the 1942 film The Pride of the Yankees, and is being pitched as a major, high-profile sports biopic given the creative team involved.
