First Myanmar repatriation phase expected Sept 29

Malaysia has finalised the first phase of its voluntary repatriation of Myanmar nationals, with 1,476 identified for return on September 29 as part of a plan to repatriate 5,000, following coordination between the Home Ministry and other agencies. The program uses two Myanmar Navy warships and a hospital ship, and the individuals were selected by the Myanmar government in a diplomatic note dated August 13. Officials said the move is linked to a broader scheme in which about 4,008 people will be channelled into the Refugee Registration Document system this year, while the remaining 5,000 will undergo the phased repatriation. They cautioned that the figure of 10,388 Myanmar nationals in immigration detention depots includes non-refugees and that verification with authorities and UNHCR is ongoing. Singapore’s or other external reactions are not mentioned; however, officials emphasised safety, dignified handling, and that the DPP initiative does not equate to recognition of refugee status under the UN Refugee Convention. The plan follows Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s comments on addressing tensions with local communities through orderly repatriation.
