FDA Approves Updated COVID-19 Vaccines Nationwide
The FDA approved Pfizer and BioNTech’s Comirnaty XFG, the 2026-2027 COVID-19 vaccine formula updated to target the XFG variant, for adults 65 and older and for ages 5–64 with at least one underlying condition. The approval is based on a comprehensive evidence package across clinical, non-clinical, real-world data, and manufacturing quality, aligning with the FDA’s guidance that XFG is the preferred composition for fall use. Nonclinical data indicate the XFG-adapted vaccine elicits robust immune responses against XFG and other circulating lineages, supporting broader protection beyond the target variant. Distribution is underway, with shipments to pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics expected within days to ensure access ahead of the fall respiratory season. Pfizer and BioNTech note that more than five billion doses of Comirnaty have been distributed globally and emphasize a favorable safety and efficacy profile across prior formulas and real-world evidence. The announcements come as part of an ongoing cadence of updating the vaccine to match emerging variants and maintain protection against severe outcomes.
