Dhani Harrison and Nigel Godrich have launched a new band called Dragonflies, releasing a self-titled debut album on September 18 through Dark Horse Records/BMG. The project’s lead single, Slower, is accompanied by a hand-drawn video directed by RUFFMERCY, and the duo describe their process as a spontaneous exchange of ideas built from tape loops in Godrich’s Brixton studio. Harrison takes on singing and guitar while Godrich shapes the music in real time, a collaboration they describe as a refreshing shift from each artist’s usual approach. The work draws on influences from Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, Japan’s David Sylvian, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, blending organic instrumentation with electronic textures into what has been described as earthbound space rock. Collaborators on the project include Joey Waronker on percussion and David Campbell on arrangements, underscoring the collaborative, high-profile nature of Dragonflies. The backstory of the collaboration traces to lockdown conversations when Harrison sought advice for his Innerstanding project, which evolved into a broader artistic endeavour between longtime friends.
