Depleted Uranium Used by Russia in Chernihiv Drone Attacks

The Security Service of Ukraine reports six new cases of Russia using depleted uranium munitions in Chernihiv region, with dangerous components found in Geran-2 strike drones and R-60M missiles repurposed for UAV use. Radiological examinations showed radiation levels about 80 times the natural background, with gamma readings of 8.3 to 24 μSv/h far exceeding the 0.3 μSv/h sanitary limit, posing direct health and environmental risks. Investigations confirmed the warheads contain Uranium-235 and Uranium-238, verified by dosimetric equipment and mobile radiological systems. After detecting the munitions, authorities neutralized them and implemented safety measures, and a criminal proceeding was opened under war crimes (Article 438). The SBU urges the public to avoid approaching drone or missile fragments and to report discoveries to the SBU, DSNS, or National Police, noting ongoing investigations. Ukraine and international observers describe such actions as potential war crimes and potentially genocidal in intent, with the investigation continuing under Chernihiv regional oversight.
