Colts Hopeful Pierce, Downs Return Soon
Colts wide receivers Alec Pierce and Josh Downs are both dealing with injuries ahead of a joint practice with the Patriots, with Pierce on the physically unable to perform list after ankle surgery and Downs dealing with a groin issue described as not serious by coach Shane Steichen. General manager Chris Ballard said Pierce has had no setbacks since surgery, has not received any PRP injections, and remains on the PUP list, with a fluid return timeline and a goal of being ready for the regular season opener. Ballard also indicated Downs could practice soon, though he has missed multiple practices, as the team evaluates how to deploy its receivers with Pierce sidelined. Additional injuries include cornerback Justin Walley with a hamstring tweak and several other Colts players—Laquon Treadwell, DJ Giddens, Hunter Wohler, and CJ Allen—nursing minor injuries in camp. The Colts are navigating a thinner receiver room as they prepare for early-season opportunities while Pierce and Downs target contributions once healthy. The outlook remains cautious with day-by-day timelines for Pierce and ongoing evaluation for Downs ahead of practice reps in the coming days.
