Cape Verde appoints Bettencourt for 2027 AFCON
Cape Verde has promoted Humberto Bettencourt, 51, from his long-running role as Bubista’s assistant to become the head coach after Bubista left to coach Moroccan club RS Berkane. The federation emphasized continuity, noting Bettencourt’s familiarity with the squad, playing philosophy, and its World Cup success, including Cape Verde’s historic debut and knockout-stage qualification under Bubista with Bettencourt on the coaching staff. Bettencourt’s first major task will be preparing Cape Verde for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September and October, with Group K opponents including Mali, Liberia, and Rwanda. Cape Verde’s 2026 World Cup run featured a 0-0 draw with Spain, a 2-2 draw with Uruguay, a 0-0 result against Saudi Arabia, and a narrow 3-2 extra-time loss to Argentina in the Round of 32, highlighting the team’s rapid rise. The decision to promote Bettencourt reflects the federation’s aim to build on that historic campaign and sustain momentum for the national team going forward.
