Vanguard to Acquire Altruist in $4B Deal
Vanguard agreed to acquire Altruist, an AI-enabled wealth technology and custody platform for independent financial advisors, in a deal valued around $4 billion as it pursues a deeper push into advisory services. The acquisition marks Vanguard’s largest technology play to date and aims to help advisors serve more clients with improved workflows and outcomes, leveraging Altruist’s platform and Hazel AI tools. Altruist, backed by substantial VC funding and valued at about $1.9 billion in 2025, has been a strategic partner of Vanguard since 2020, with Vanguard remaining a stakeholder as the deal advances. The transaction will keep Altruist operating as a standalone business under CEO Jason Wenk, while providing greater scale and support from Vanguard’s resources and investment expertise. The move underscores Vanguard’s shift from a pure low-cost index fund provider toward broader financial advice platforms and tech-enabled advisory services. Vanguard CEO Salim Ramji framed the deal as a way to close the advisory gap by enabling more investors to access high-quality financial guidance through technology-led solutions.
