Army Plans Nuclear Microreactors at Five Bases
The U.S. Army and the Defense Innovation Unit have selected five bases to receive nuclear microreactors under the Janus program, with a total potential investment of up to $2.2 billion through 2031. Antares Nuclear will deploy at Fort Bragg, BWXT Advanced Technologies at Fort Campbell, General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems at Fort Hood, Radiant Industries at Fort Benning, and Westinghouse Government Services at Fort Drum. The reactors will be contractor-owned and operated and are not intended to power entire bases, but to provide reliable baseload power and reduce dependence on civilian grids. The effort envisions more than 20 microreactors across DoD sites, with milestones tied to demonstrated performance and funding contingent on meeting technical goals. The Army expects at least one functioning reactor by the end of fiscal 2028 as part of a phased rollout, with site assessments and construction advancing in the coming years. The selection and contracts mark a significant step in expanding domestic nuclear microreactor capabilities for national defense and energy resilience.
