Bulgaria Secures Seven Minehunters From Belgium, Netherlands to Clear Black Sea Mines

Bulgaria is set to expand its Black Sea mine countermeasures by receiving seven Tripartite-class mine-hunting vessels from Belgium and the Netherlands, approved by Bulgaria’s parliament as part of a broader NATO effort. Three ships will come from the Netherlands and four from Belgium, with Bulgaria funding repairs and modernization to bring all seven up to NATO combat-readiness standards. The plan includes joint crew training, spare parts, and additional equipment to support the vessels as part of the Black Sea Mine Countermeasures Task Group, a Bulgarian-Romanian-Turkish initiative created after the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict. The transfers align with a July NATO agreement to expand a multinational demining task force alongside Romania and Türkiye to clear floating mines near critical infrastructure. Delivery timing could be influenced by the Montreux Convention, which governs wartime access through the Bosporus, a factor that has already affected vessel passage in the region. Bulgaria’s defence minister stressed the need for these assets, highlighting their role in enhancing capabilities against drifting mines and supporting regional security.
