Blue Point One Breaks Ground in Louisiana

Blue Point One, a CF Industries/JERA/Mitsui joint venture, broke ground in Modeste, Louisiana, on a $3.7 billion low-carbon ammonia plant that is planned to produce about 1.4 million metric tons per year and expected to begin operations in 2029. The project will use autothermal reforming to generate hydrogen for ammonia synthesis and aims to capture and permanently sequester roughly 98% of the CO2 produced, with transport and storage coordinated through a partnership involving 1PointFive and Enbridge. Linde is investing more than $400 million in an on-site air-separation unit to supply the process, while CF Industries is committing about $550 million for shared, scalable infrastructure to support future upgrades. The venture projects significant economic impact, including more than 100 high-paying local jobs once operational and about 3,900 construction jobs over four years, alongside expanded domestic fertilizer and potentially export capacities. The collaboration underscores the role of Japanese partners in enhancing project bankability and market reach as the plant targets both traditional agricultural customers and emerging energy applications.
