Baylor Genetics Data Breach Affects 2.8 Million People

A Baylor Genetics data breach affected about 2.8 million people nationwide, with potentially exposed sensitive genetic, medical, and personal information. The unauthorized party accessed portions of the company’s network for six days in mid-June, with suspicious activity detected around June 15. Information potentially exposed includes names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, diagnoses, laboratory results, and health insurance details, with a very limited subset of patients and employees possibly having SSNs and other identifying data exposed. Notification letters to affected individuals began going out on August 14 after a data review completed around July 30, and some recipients may not recognize the Baylor Genetics name. The breach also potentially affected current and former employees, exposing government IDs and financial account information, while laboratory operations continued during the investigation. State-by-state counts show tens of thousands affected in multiple states, highlighting the particularly sensitive nature of genetic and laboratory data.
