WH Spox Says They Are ‘Not Worried About Polls,’ After Biden Told Reporter to ‘Read the Polls’

The White House insists that President Joe Biden and his aides are not worried about polls that show Democrats really do not want him to run again.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about a poll from CNN that found 75% of Democrats do not want Biden to run again.

“What does the president make of that dynamic?” the reporter asked.

“We’re not worried about polls. The president has been clear that he intends to run,” Jean-Pierre responded.

She continued, “But we are so far away from that time, from being even being close to be thinking about that.”

A new CNN poll found that 75% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning voters said they do not want Biden to be their party’s nominee.

Among those under 45, 82% said they want someone other than Biden to be the party’s nominee. And among older voters, he does not get that much of a benefit, as 69% said they want another candidate as well.

And 73% of respondents without a college degree said they want someone else, while 78% of college graduates said the same.

The poll was conducted July 22-24, and the margin of error has a plus or minus 6.7 points.

A New York Times/Siena poll earlier this month also found a majority of Democrats want someone other than Biden to run in 2024.

When Biden was asked about that poll, he fired back, “They want me to run,”

After the reporter noted that the poll found two-thirds of Democrats said they do not want him to run again, Biden said, “Read the poll. Read the polls, Jack. You guys are all the same. That poll showed that 92% of Democrats, if I ran, would vote for me.”

His comments referred to a portion of that survey that found 92% of Democrats would vote for him if he was running against former President Donald Trump.

Much like his predecessor, it seems Biden and his aides claim to pay attention to polls and other indicators when it suits them. In January, he told reporters that he did not believe polls that showed his approval rating was declining.

Meanwhile, after the president bragged about stock market gain, Jean-Pierre told reporters in May — after the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged over 1,000 points — that the stock market is “not something we keep an eye on every day.”

The White House and Biden can try to pretend that they don’t see or notice negative trends, but just hiding and trying to ignore or avoid them is not going to make them go away or change.
