Music Icon Reveals Parkinson’s Diagnosis, Skin Cancer Surgery

Carly Simon has revealed that she has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and recently underwent surgery to treat basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer.

According to Fox News, the 83-year-old singer, best known for hits including "You're So Vain," explained in a statement to People published July 27 that her health struggles led her to step away from public life.

Simon said her health problems began with arthritis in both knees and one hip.

After undergoing three joint replacement surgeries, she initially believed her continued difficulty walking was part of the recovery process.

Her mobility, however, continued to decline. Simon said she struggled to stand from low chairs and deep couches and eventually needed considerable assistance to walk.

An evaluation at the Mayo Clinic eventually led to her Parkinson’s diagnosis. She began treatment to manage symptoms, including stiffness.

"Parkinson's is usually associated with movement, tremors and balance, but it can affect much more than the body," Simon said.

She also described experiencing exhaustion, anxiety, depression and apathy, explaining that the condition sometimes left her struggling to find the motivation to participate in everyday activities.

During the same period, Simon was treated for basal cell carcinoma on her face.

Although the cancer was removed, she said the surgery affected how she felt about her appearance and contributed to her decision to remain out of the public eye.

"Between my mobility issues, the Parkinson's diagnosis, the surgery and the emotional effects of it all, withdrawing from public view was the most palatable reaction," Simon said.
