Lionel Messi has spoken publicly about Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in Sunday’s FIFA World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium.
According to the New York Post, the 39-year-old soccer star shared an emotional message on Instagram Monday, acknowledging the pain of falling short while reflecting on what Argentina accomplished during the tournament.
“The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal,” Messi wrote. “But I also hold on to all the good… The matches we turned around, giving our all, matches that will forever remain in our memories.”
Messi also pointed to the support Argentina received throughout the tournament and the effort that carried the team to its second straight World Cup final.
