Lionel Messi has spoken publicly about Argentina’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Spain in Sunday’s FIFA World Cup Final at MetLife Stadium.

According to the New York Post, the 39-year-old soccer star shared an emotional message on Instagram Monday, acknowledging the pain of falling short while reflecting on what Argentina accomplished during the tournament.

“The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal,” Messi wrote. “But I also hold on to all the good… The matches we turned around, giving our all, matches that will forever remain in our memories.”

Messi also pointed to the support Argentina received throughout the tournament and the effort that carried the team to its second straight World Cup final.

“Today it’s hard to fully appreciate what we accomplished, but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals,” he wrote.

He thanked fans for their messages and support before congratulating Spain on winning the championship.

“I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship,” Messi wrote.

The defeat was visibly difficult for Messi, who sat on the field after the final whistle as Argentina's hopes of winning back-to-back World Cup titles disappeared.

Despite the disappointment, Messi later shared a moment with Spain star Lamine Yamal.

The two players shook hands and hugged following the match, creating a memorable scene between two generations of soccer talent.

Messi and his Argentina teammates had faced criticism after appearing to avoid their media obligations following the loss.

The team reportedly left the stadium through a back exit and headed toward the team bus through a loading dock.

Not every player is required to speak with reporters after a World Cup match, but teams must make designated players available to the media.

Fox analyst Alexi Lalas criticized Argentina's decision, calling it “weak.”

Messi finished the tournament with eight goals, putting him among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot.

However, France star Kylian Mbappé moved ahead of him with 10 goals after scoring twice in the third-place match, which England won 6-4.
