Former Vice President Kamala Harris is facing a wave of criticism from conservatives after warning that the Republican-backed SAVE America Act would require Americans to "prove who you are" before registering to vote.

According to Fox News, Harris made the comments in a video posted Friday as she urged Americans to pay attention to the upcoming midterm elections.

While criticizing the legislation, she pointed to the identification documents that could be required under the proposal.

"You’re going to have to have proof of who you are," Harris said.

She went on to cite a passport or birth certificate as examples, arguing that many Americans do not have those documents readily available.

"Same point, obstacles to make it difficult for you to register to vote," Harris said.

The comments quickly spread across conservative social media, with critics arguing that Harris had unintentionally highlighted the central argument behind the bill.

Conservative commentator Eric Daughetry called Harris an "Incredible SAVE America Act saleswoman," while former White House press secretary Sean Spicer mocked the idea that proving one's identity would be an unreasonable requirement.

Texas Rep. Wesley Hunt also pushed back against comparisons between voter identification requirements and historic voting restrictions.

"The poll tax is gone. Jim Crow is gone. Proving you’re an American citizen before voting in an American election is not oppression. It’s common sense," Hunt wrote.

The video also caught the attention of President Donald Trump, who shared the clip and pinned it to the top of his Truth Social profile.

Trump has made passage of the SAVE Act a major priority, repeatedly calling for stronger election-related identification requirements. His administration has continued pressing Congress to take up the legislation as Republicans prepare to return to Washington.

Democrats have strongly opposed the measure, arguing that its documentation requirements could create barriers for eligible voters who lack the necessary paperwork.

The debate comes as lawmakers look toward the 2026 midterm elections. Fourteen states and Washington, D.C., currently do not require most voters to show identification when casting ballots in person.

Trump and Republican supporters of the SAVE Act say the measure would help strengthen election security, while Democrats argue that existing safeguards are sufficient and that the legislation could make voting harder for some Americans.
