A Florida woman is facing a felony theft charge after authorities accused her of pretending to have Cancer and collecting more than $40,000 from people who believed they were helping her pay for treatment.

According to Fox News, Maribeth Ellen Jones, 51, of Bonita Springs, was charged with grand theft between $20,000 and $100,000. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office said she surrendered at the Naples Jail Center after detectives obtained an arrest warrant.

Investigators said Jones worked as an activities director in the community and told residents between 2022 and 2024 that she had Cancer and was undergoing treatment.

The claim allegedly prompted hundreds of people to give her money. Detectives said Jones also portrayed her condition as worsening, at one point allowing community members to cut her hair so she would appear to be preparing for chemotherapy.

According to investigators, residents organized a GoFundMe campaign on Jones’ behalf, with the proceeds connected to her personal bank account. People also allegedly gave her cash and checks directly.

The sheriff’s office said Jones had previously been the beneficiary of two other GoFundMe campaigns in which she also claimed to have Cancer.

The investigation later determined that Jones did not have the disease, authorities said. Detectives allege she instead used the money to cover personal debts.

Investigators said 238 Naples residents were defrauded of more than $40,000.

GoFundMe said it removed fundraisers associated with Jones and permanently banned her from using the platform for future campaigns.

"More than $41,000 was refunded to donors on the platform through GoFundMe’s Giving Guarantee," a spokesperson told Fox 13, describing the policy as a way to provide refunds when something goes wrong with a fundraiser.

The sheriff condemned the alleged scheme, saying it took advantage of people who believed they were helping someone facing a serious illness.

"This is an appalling case because it exploited the kindness and generosity of people who truly wanted to help someone they believed was fighting for her life," Sheriff Kevin Rambosk said.

Rambosk also warned that alleged fundraising scams can have effects beyond the immediate financial losses.

"This type of scam not only hurts victims financially, it undermines trust in legitimate fundraisers for people who genuinely need help," he said.

Jones is now facing the grand theft charge as the case moves through the legal system. The allegations against her have not been proven in court.
