Dolly Parton, the country music legend whose songs made her one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world, has died at 80.

She leaves behind a career spanning more than six decades and a catalog that includes “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You.”
Born in Tennessee, Parton rose from a poor childhood to become one of the best-selling recording artists in history. She sold more than 100 million records worldwide and earned 11 Grammy Awards during a career that extended well beyond country music.
Parton also became a major Hollywood presence, starring in movies including “9 to 5” and “Steel Magnolias.” Her work in music and film made her a household name, while her distinctive personality and songwriting connected her with generations of fans.
Her influence reached far beyond entertainment. Through the Imagination Library, Parton helped put millions of books into the hands of children, making childhood literacy one of the central causes associated with her name.
Parton had been dealing with health problems in recent months. She canceled her Las Vegas residency and was forced to miss a recent Dollywood appearance after her doctor advised her not to travel because of dizziness and dehydration.
