1 in 4 Former NFL Players Show CTE
A suite of recent studies suggests that at least about a quarter of former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 showed evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) upon brain examination, with authors noting this as a conservative baseline due to many brains not being donated. The research draws on brain banks affiliated with Boston University, Mass General Brigham, and other institutions, involving hundreds of donor brains from players who had competed in the NFL since 1949. Researchers caution that the actual prevalence could be higher, since non-donated brains are not accounted for and brain donation tends to skew toward cases with suspected symptoms. In widely cited findings, among donated brains a very large majority showed CTE, and the studies emphasize that CTE can currently be confirmed only after death, complicating in-life prevalence estimates. The work also highlights associations between advanced CTE and dementia-like symptoms observed during life, underscoring potential long-term cognitive and behavioral impacts for players. Taken together, the results reinforce mounting concerns about the prevalence of CTE in football and the need for improved prevention, detection, and care strategies for athletes affected by repetitive head trauma.
