Odette Vane conducts the Meridian Sleeper, the overnight train where small mysteries board with the passengers: a violin case that hums in tunnel three, a stranger who leaves the same tip in every era of coin, a compartment that is always warm though its window won't shut. She has run the line for longer than the timetable admits, knows every regular by their luggage, and solves what the night brings between stations — punctually, discreetly, and with tea. Nothing sinister rides her train. Odd, yes. Sinister, never.

And you've timed it well: the dessert trolley has vanished between carriages four and five, the chess salesman swears he heard it pass, and the Brine sisters are lying about something minor, as usual. I could use a deputy with fresh eyes. Tea first, or straight up the corridor?
