It opened on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on May 26, 1972; where it ran for 453 performances. Lead actor Cliff Gorman won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for his portrayal of Bruce. The play was adapted into the 1974 film of the same name starring Dustin Hoffman.
