Paul Responds To Gesture

Things appear to be getting a little tense at the Fauci household.

Former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci found himself back in the headlines Thursday after the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted to hold him in contempt of Congress.

And only a few hours later, his wife, Christine Grady, had a message of her own for a photographer outside their Washington, D.C., home.

It did not require words.

According to the New York Post, Grady was photographed giving the middle finger to a camera as she drove away from the couple’s neighborhood. Fauci was sitting in the passenger seat at the time, looking out the window.

Subtle it was not.

The moment came after the Senate committee voted 8-5, along party lines, to hold Fauci in contempt following his July 29 appearance before lawmakers.

According to the Post, Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment rights 111 times during that appearance while senators questioned him about his handling of issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

That is quite a lot of Fifth Amendment invoking.

Earlier Thursday, photographers reportedly spotted Fauci outside the couple’s $2.4 million Washington home taking a recycling bin to the curb. The Post described the former government official as looking unhappy while performing the very ordinary household chore.

Washington really does offer a little bit of everything.

Fauci later got into the passenger side of a vehicle driven by Grady, who is a Georgetown University professor and longtime bioethicist. As the couple drove away, Grady reportedly spotted the photographer and raised her middle finger toward the camera.

The photograph quickly became another eye-catching chapter in a story that had already become politically charged.

Fauci has not been convicted of a crime simply because the committee voted to hold him in contempt. The committee’s action refers the matter for possible prosecution, and the Justice Department would have to decide whether to pursue the case.

If charges are brought and Fauci is eventually convicted of contempt of Congress, he could reportedly face as much as one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

So there are still several legal steps between a Senate committee vote and anybody trading a recycling bin for a jail cell.

Sen. Rand Paul, the Kentucky Republican who has spent years publicly clashing with Fauci over the government’s response to COVID-19, also reacted to the development on social media, and it was the perfect response.

Paul has repeatedly challenged Fauci during congressional hearings, particularly over pandemic policy and questions involving government-funded research. Their exchanges became some of the most recognizable confrontations from the COVID era.

Now Fauci’s latest congressional appearance has moved beyond another heated hearing-room argument.

The committee has voted.

The matter could move to the Justice Department.

And outside the Fauci home, Grady apparently decided that the traditional “no comment” was not quite expressive enough.

The entire scene was almost painfully Washington: a former top federal official facing possible legal consequences, senators fighting along party lines, photographers camped outside an expensive home, and one very irritated spouse delivering a one-finger response from behind the wheel.

Whatever happens next will depend on the Justice Department.

For now, Fauci faces a contempt referral, Grady has supplied the photo of the day, and the recycling apparently made it safely to the curb.
